COUNTING DOLLARS

My love and I walked along hand in hand
Collecting sea shells down by the shore
Counting dollars half buried in sand
Watching the seagulls and pelicans soar.

Collecting sea shells down by the shore
We talked about all the years we had shared
Watching the seagulls and pelicans soar
Oh, the places we'd been, the dreams we had dared.

We talked about all the years we had shared
We stopped just to listen to the sounds of the sea
Oh, the places we'd been, the dreams we had dared
It all stood still for a moment or three.

We stopped just to listen to the sounds of the sea
As my love and I walked along hand in hand
It all stood still for a moment or three
As we counted dollars half buried in sand.

Thankful #27

I'm thankful for Octopi
And cool dreams of flying
Coffee and chocolate
And comfortable shoes
Relaxing by firelight
And schmoozing with friends
My silly dog whiskey
Wagging his tail.
Daffodils and swimming pools
And beautiful places
My family and memories
And hope in my heart.

prompt #27 What are you thankful for? Write an appreciative poem. Hmmm..I made a list.

Away

Nothing to do
Nowhere to go
No one that needs me
To take them
To give them
To listen, to see
No real time
Just day time
And night
Hungry or not
Cooler or hot
Peace for a while
For a moment
Or two
Nowhere to go
Nothing to do.

My Love and I - Day 14: A Sonnet

My Love and I

My love and I need to run away for a while
To relax and remember how it feels to smile
Far away to some paradise close to the sea
On an isolated island where we don't need a key
Because not a soul will around there for days
Except seagulls and turtles and endless sun rays
We'll feast upon mangos and coconuts and fish
Stay up all night long, and wake when we wish
Swimming in an ocean that's warm and clear
We won't want to leave until maybe next year
And I'll collect sea shells while he lies in the sun
And together we'll count stars when the sunsets are done
It all sounds like heaven, and that's how it will seem
If we ever escape, and find this sweet dream.

All I Need...

A bucket full of cool wet sand
Moulded, pat down well,
A feather for a flag on top
Some seaweed and some shells.

A peice or two of sea glass
For the windows will do fine,
The ocean spray and sunlight
Will make the castle shine.

A photo of the masterpiece
In case memories grow thin,
For this castle on the sand will last
Just until the tide comes in.

This was inspired by Robert Lee Brewer's Wednesday Prompt: "measured".

For Me

The ocean seems tired somehow;
Waves lapping softly on the sand
Half hearted and lethargic,
As though it hadn't the will
Or the energy to try harder.
Stepping out, the water surrounds me
Embracing me like an old friend,
Assuring me that, at least for now,
The tides will wait, patiently...for me.

the Sea

The sea blows kisses
As I walk along the shore
Like a lost lover.

Mermaid

The only sound is the sound
Of my breath and strange echoes
That travel from the surface
Into my cool bluish world.
Weightless, I feel so at home
As though I were meant to swim.

Maybe in another life,
I was a mermaid under
The sea, hair flowing, long fins,
Living without gravity,
Flying through a liquid space
Where the stars are all alive.

Heat

A soft ocean breeze blows across my face
A moment of comfort, mid-afternoon;
A brief reprieve from the hot sticky air
That has lasted past summer into fall.
Birds flying in formations high above
Sand and heat, high above the crashing waves
And footprints made by late season tourists
Sun-burned, sweaty, but in no rush to leave.
I watch the birds, envious of their flight
And the feeling of cool wind on their wings.

Artwork

Sunset colors paint the sky
With hues that glow, and light up
The millions of waves dancing
On a darkening ocean.
Sunflower gold, to poppy
Orange, fuchsia, and purples...

God's brushstrokes command the clouds
So far beyond any dream
In my imagination;
More than any words I write
Or artwork once created.
It is a glimpse of heaven.

Octopus

If I were an octopus under the sea,
I'd wrap myself 'round you with my eight long arms.
I'd ink up the water to protect you from harm,
And invite you to live in a garden with me.
I'd flash you bright colors, impress you with smarts;
Together we'd go out for lobster and more!
We'd go to my favorite spots on the sea floor,
And I'd love you, my dear, with all three of my hearts!

Day 26 of April Poem a Day Challenge. Prompt: an animal poem.  Octopi are my favorite sea creatures! As a mom, I envy the eight arms, three hearts, big brain and the ability to get out of tight situations. On top of all that, they are beautiful, and amazingly graceful in movement. In honor of the Octopus, I decided to try a poetry form called a "brace octave".  I hope I did it right. :)

Tourist Season

We'd straighten and stack up the souvenirs:
Stuffed killer whales, keychains, and sailor hats.
We'd brace ourselves, breathe, and prepare to deal
With the camera crowd and the spoiled brats.

The school groups had already started to wane
Replaced by people from points all around;
Tourists who seems to know no respect
Carelessly leaving their trash on the ground.

"I want it! I want it!" the children would scream
And their parents would say "Oh, all right,"
Buying some cheap toy to shut them up quick
That would end up in pieces that night.

I'd smile and say "Thank you," as they handed me cash
Good luck with those kids, I was thinking;
Knowing those tourists would reach their hotel
Get the kids into bed and start drinking.

But at the end of the day we did realize
That those people who drove us insane,
Were the reason we all got a paycheck each week
And for that, we couldn't complain.

We collectively sighed when the days grew long
And summer had come to an end;
We'd clean up the mess and stock up the shelves
For the locals and school kids again.

Day 11 April PAD prompt: a poem about a season, ie: spring, summer...wabbit...
When I was in college I worked at Marineland, in Palos Verdes, CA. It is long since gone, but while it lasted it was a great place to work, and a really fun place to visit. It was crazy in the summer, but we all survived. This is dedicated to all my friends and fellow Marinelanders.

Moon Fall (Day 25 - a "falling" poem)

                                                      Moon Fall

The moonlight drips like liquid silver
Settling first on the dark ocean's surface
And then exploding into sparks of light
That float down to the bottom of the sea
                                                            And become...sand dollars.

Now and Never

 Waves rolling,
                 crashing,
                           turning,
Ocean tossing,
                 thrashing,
                           churning.

Whispered
                roaring:;
                           salt thick air.

A forever of now,

                         That was never there.

Home by the Sea

Opened my eyes, opened the door,
Breathed in the air, there by the shore,
Sand at my feet, sand on the floor,
Can't ask for more, can't ask for more.

...SALTY...

...Salty...

The sweat on my skin
The tears on my face
The taste in my mouth
As I walked down the beach
Thinking of you.

The sea rolling in
The foam on the shore
My toes in the sand
As I heard the waves crash
Thinking of you

The things that we said
The promises made
The dreams that we planned
As I watched the sun set
Thinking of you

Step by Step

Step by step
Soft and wet
Footprints left behind

Surf and sand
Land and sea
Poems to unwind

Pebbles, stones
Ocean foam
Life inside a shell

Seagulls cry
Sky so blue
Stories yet to tell.

Sailing Away...

I want to sail away somewhere

just vanish without a trace

an island with palm trees and white sand

and a cool breeze caressing my face.

I want to sail away someday

and search for a place to call home

a paradise waits for me I feel sure

a heaven on earth of my own.
